How to Identify Geode

A geode is a hollow, roughly spherical rock lined on the inside with crystals. From the outside it looks like a lumpy stone ball — the trick is spotting the clues before you decide whether to crack it open.

Inspect any natural opening, crack, or vug with a hand lens. Tiny sparkling crystal terminations peeking out strongly suggest a crystal-lined interior. A completely solid, uniform break surface points to a nodule instead.

Look-Alikes & How to Tell the Difference

Solid nodule

Same rounded shape and bumpy skin, but completely filled with mineral (often chalcedony or agate) and therefore heavy for its size. A nodule fails the heft test — it is not hollow. Many 'geodes' are actually solid agate nodules, which are still beautiful when cut.

Concretion

A rounded sedimentary mass that grew around a nucleus in mud or sandstone. Usually solid, often with concentric internal layers rather than a crystal-lined cavity, and it forms in sandstone/shale rather than volcanic rock.

Thunderegg

A close cousin: a rhyolite nodule with an agate or chalcedony center, often star-shaped inside. Thundereggs are typically solid (not hollow) and heavier; a true geode has an open, crystal-lined cavity.
