How to Identify Agate

Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony — microcrystalline quartz. The give-aways are curved, concentric banding, a waxy glow, and translucent edges when you hold it to the light.

Where to Find It

Agate forms when silica-rich water fills gas pockets and cavities in volcanic rock (especially basalt) and slowly deposits chalcedony in layers. Look in and around old lava flows, in gravel bars and beaches downstream of volcanic terrain, and in weathered basalt. Loose agates survive tumbling in rivers because they are hard and tough.

What Agate Looks Like

  • Curved, concentric banding that follows the shape of the original cavity — the single most reliable clue. Bands can be sharp or subtle.
  • Translucent edges: hold a thin edge to a bright light and it glows, letting some light pass. Fully opaque, chalky stone is more likely jasper or chert.
  • A waxy or greasy luster on natural surfaces, and a glassy shine when polished.
  • Conchoidal (shell-like, curved) fracture with sharp edges when chipped — no flat cleavage planes.
  • A smooth, often rounded or lumpy exterior on nodules; a 'fortification' pattern of angular bands when cut.
  • Hardness you can feel — it will scratch a steel knife or glass rather than the other way around.

Simple Tests to Confirm It’s Agate

You can do these at home with basic tools. They won’t damage a good specimen.

Scratch-glass hardness test

Try to scratch a piece of glass (a bottle or a hardness plate) with a sharp edge of the specimen. Agate is hardness ~7 and will scratch glass cleanly, leaving no mark on itself. If your specimen is scratched by glass or a steel knife, it is softer than agate — likely calcite or another mineral.

Edge translucency (flashlight) test

Shine a phone flashlight against a thin edge in a dark room. Agate is translucent and will glow, often revealing internal banding. Opaque specimens that block all light are more likely jasper (opaque chalcedony) or ordinary chert.

Acid test the matrix

Put a drop of weak acid (vinegar, or dilute hydrochloric) on the host rock or any white coating. Agate itself does not fizz. If the surface or matrix bubbles, that part is a carbonate like calcite — a common agate look-alike and vein filling.

Look for banding on a wet or cut face

Wet the stone or examine a cut/broken face with a hand lens. Concentric or fortification-style banding confirms agate over solid, unbanded chalcedony. Wetting mimics a polish and makes faint bands pop.

Look-Alikes & How to Tell the Difference

Jasper

Also chalcedony and the same hardness, but jasper is opaque and typically unbanded (or spotted/patchy) because of iron and clay impurities. Agate is translucent at the edges and banded; jasper blocks light.

Chert / flint

Dull, opaque, usually gray-to-brown microcrystalline quartz with no banding and a matte luster. Shares hardness 7 and conchoidal fracture, but lacks agate's translucency and concentric layers.

Quartz (crystalline)

Same composition and hardness, but macrocrystalline quartz shows glassy transparency and can form visible six-sided crystals. Agate is microcrystalline — no visible crystals, and it is banded rather than clear.

Calcite

Often banded (as in 'onyx marble') and can look similar, but calcite is much softer (hardness 3), scratches with a knife, and fizzes in acid. Agate is hard and acid-inert.
