Where to Find It

Both jades form in high-pressure metamorphic settings tied to ancient subduction zones. Nephrite is the more widespread and turns up as boulders and river cobbles in places like British Columbia, Wyoming, New Zealand, and Siberia. Jadeite is far rarer — Myanmar (Burma) is the classic source, with Guatemala another. Loose jade is often found as tough, water-worn cobbles that resist breaking.

What Jade Looks Like

  • A smooth, greasy or soapy luster — jade looks almost oily rather than glassy or sparkly.
  • A dense, solid heft: real jade feels heavier in the hand than its size suggests, jadeite especially.
  • Cool to the touch and slow to warm, because it conducts heat away from your skin.
  • A fine, even, slightly translucent body with no visible individual crystals — nephrite may look fibrous, jadeite slightly granular.
  • Color that is often uneven or mottled with subtle veining; unnaturally uniform, vivid green can signal dye or glass.
  • No air bubbles (a giveaway of glass imitations) and no obvious mold seams.

Simple Tests to Confirm It’s Jade

You can do these at home with basic tools. They won’t damage a good specimen.

Density / heft test

Weigh the piece against something of similar size. Jade is dense (nephrite ~2.95, jadeite ~3.3), so it feels heavier than glass, plastic, or serpentine of the same size. A piece that feels light for its size is likely an imitation.

Scratch test (careful)

Jade is hard enough that a steel knife should not scratch it, and jadeite (7) can lightly scratch glass. But many harder imitations behave similarly, and softer fakes like serpentine (2.5–4) scratch easily. Do any scratch test on an inconspicuous spot — and never on a valuable finished piece.

Toughness / tap (ring) test

Gently tapped or clicked against another piece, real jade — especially nephrite — often gives a clear, resonant, musical ring rather than a dull click, thanks to its dense interlocking structure. This is a traditional clue, not proof, and should never involve striking hard enough to risk damage.

Temperature (cool-to-touch) test

Hold the stone briefly. Jade stays cool and warms slowly because it draws heat from your hand; plastic and resin imitations warm up quickly and feel comparatively 'soft' in temperature. Glass also feels cool, so pair this with the density and other tests.

Look-Alikes & How to Tell the Difference

Serpentine ('new jade')

The most common jade substitute. Serpentine is softer (2.5–4) so a knife scratches it, and it is less dense, so it feels lighter. It often looks a bit too even and slightly soapy. Density and a scratch on a hidden spot separate it from real jade.

Aventurine quartz

Green quartz with glittery mica flecks (aventurescence). It is quartz-hard but shows those sparkly inclusions and lacks jade's greasy, fibrous feel. Its density (2.65) is lower than jadeite's.

Dyed quartz / chalcedony

Quartz dyed green to imitate jade. Under magnification the color often concentrates in cracks and looks superficial. Quartz is hardness 7 like jadeite, so use color distribution, density, and the greasy-vs-glassy luster to tell them apart.

Glass and plastic imitations

Glass may show trapped air bubbles and mold seams and feels less dense; plastic warms quickly, is much lighter, and can be scratched easily. Neither has jade's cool, heavy, greasy character.
