What quartz is

Quartz is silicon dioxide (SiO₂), and every specimen shares the same core properties no matter its color:

  • Hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale — hard enough to scratch glass and steel.
  • Glassy (vitreous) luster on fresh surfaces.
  • No cleavage. Quartz does not split along flat planes; instead it breaks along curved, shell-like conchoidal fractures.
  • Hexagonal crystals. When it grows freely, quartz forms six-sided prisms capped by a pyramid-like point.

Common quartz varieties

Most named “crystals” you see in shops are simply colored quartz. Here are the ones you are most likely to encounter:

Key identification features

Regardless of color, confirm quartz with these checks. Together they are far more reliable than color alone:

  • Hardness 7 — it will scratch glass, and a steel knife will not scratch it.
  • Glassy luster — bright and vitreous, not pearly, waxy, or metallic.
  • No cleavage, conchoidal fracture — broken surfaces are curved and shell-like, never flat cleavage planes.
  • Hexagonal form — six-sided prisms with pointed terminations when crystallized.

Common look-alikes

Several minerals resemble quartz but fail its tests. The hardness check usually settles it:

  • Calcite — much softer (Mohs 3), and it fizzes when dilute acid touches it. Quartz does neither.
  • Glass — softer (~5.5), so quartz scratches glass but not vice versa; glass may also show mold seams or trapped round bubbles.
  • Fluorite — softer (Mohs 4) and, unlike quartz, has perfect cleavage that produces flat, angular break faces.

The Mohs hardness test

The single most useful quartz test is hardness. Quartz sits at 7 on the Mohs scale, which means it will scratch a piece of glass (about 5.5) and cannot be scratched by a steel blade or nail (about 5.5–6.5). Try to scratch an inconspicuous edge of the glass with a point of your specimen; if it bites in and leaves a mark, and the specimen itself resists a knife, you are almost certainly looking at quartz. Softer look-alikes like calcite and fluorite will fail this test immediately.
